Bollywood lyricist Javed Akhtar has defended Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami, who was criticized by cleric Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi for not fasting during Ramadan. Akhtar urged Shami to ignore such remarks, praising him for making India proud.
Shami faced backlash after drinking water during a match in extreme heat. The cleric called him a "criminal" for skipping the fast. In response, Akhtar tweeted: "Shami saheb, don’t give a damn to those reactionary bigoted idiots who have any problem with your drinking water in a burning afternoon at a cricket field in Dubai. It is none of their business. You are one of the great Indian team that is making us all proud. My best wishes to you and our whole team."
Shami has been a key player in the tournament. India will now face New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final on March 9, aiming for their second title.
