Amitabh Bachchan’s Don remains a Bollywood classic, known for its thrilling plot and iconic songs, especially Khaike Paan Banaras Wala. Actress Zeenat Aman recently revealed that this beloved track was not part of the original plan. Initially created for Dev Anand’s Banarasi Babu, it was rejected as “too frivolous.”
Director Chandra Barot later felt that Don’s intense second half needed light relief, prompting the addition of the song. The cast and crew reunited at Mehboob Studio long after the film’s completion to shoot the lively sequence.
Zeenat recalled Big B’s energetic performance and the countless paans he chewed for the shoot. She also enjoyed wearing heels since Bachchan was taller than her. The song, with Kishore Kumar’s vocals and playful lyrics, became an instant hit, drawing audiences back to theatres. Its popularity even inspired a recreation by Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra in the 2006 remake.
