Dange Sinks, Laapata Ladies Floats

As anticipated, Bejoy Nambiar’s "Dange" has vanished without a trace. And no one is surprised, least of all the producers T-Series, who made no effort to promote or market the film as anything other than one to be avoided by the audience.

With near-zero marketing efforts, even lower enthusiasm from the film’s team, and an equivalent lack of interest from the audience, it's simple math.

This is a common pattern these days when small films are given a token theatrical release for technical reasons before heading to the OTT platforms where they are perceived to belong… or so the producers secretly believe.

"Dange" isn't designed as a small film. Clearly inspired by his mentor Mani Ratnam’s "Yuva," Bejoy Nambiar delves into the campus student scene with vigor.

As for the criticism that none of the main cast resembles students, how much did Ajay Devgan look like a student in "Yuva"? And Aamir Khan in "Rang De Basanti"?

Speaking of Aamir Khan, hats off to the producer for fully believing in his former wife Kiran Rao’s dream and fully supporting "Laapataa Ladies." He even offered to play the role of the wily police inspector, but Kiran preferred Ravi Kissan.

The third release of the week, "Dune 2," had a surprisingly lackluster opening. But then again, it wasn’t so surprising considering this sequel is purely intended for students of the "Dune" school.

For those attempting to make sense of the plot in "Dune 3," a word of advice: don’t waste your time.
