'Chhaava': Not For Vicky Kaushal But Sambhaji

Vicky Kaushal’s historical action drama Chhaava, directed by Laxman Utekar and based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, became a massive box-office hit, grossing 800 crore globally. In an interview with Mirchi Marathi, Mahesh Manjrekar shared his views on the film’s success, emphasizing that the real draw was the historical character, not the actor. He pointed out that while Vicky Kaushal is a talented actor, it was the portrayal of the character that attracted audiences, not his previous films, which had not performed well.

Mahesh also credited Maharashtra for the film’s triumph, saying that 80-90% of the success was due to the support from the state, particularly Pune. He stated that Maharashtra had been pivotal in saving the Hindi film industry, with Chhaava being a prime example of regional contribution to the national cinema landscape.

The film, which has crossed Rs 600 crore in India, also features Rashmika Mandanna, Akshaye Khanna, Ashutosh Rana, and Divya Dutta in key roles. Produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, Chhaava continues to perform exceptionally well at the box office.
