Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardee Sharda Sinha, a beloved folk singer especially known for her Chhath festival songs passed away at 72 in AIIMS, New Delhi. She had been battling multiple myeloma, a blood cancer since 2017 and was recently on a ventilator due to her declining health. Her son Anshuman confirmed the sad news on social media.
Sinha's passing sparked widespread grief particularly as her Chhath songs are cherished nationwide. Despite her health struggles she recorded "Dukhva Mitaai Chhathi Maiya" for this year’s festival releasing it just before her death on November 5.
Sinha’s musical journey began in the 1970s. Encouraged by her father, Sukhdev Thakur, and supported by her family, she pursued music despite initial community resistance. Known across Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Hindi folk genres, she received a National Film Award and was celebrated for her contributions to regional music, receiving the Padma Shri in 1991 and Padma Bhushan in 2018.
