Veteran actor Annu Kapoor caused controversy with his remarks on Shah Rukh Khan’s film Chak De! India, stating that the lead character Kabir Khan was originally based on coach Mir Ranjan Negi. Kapoor alleged that the filmmakers changed the character to a Muslim to promote Hindu-Muslim unity known as Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb.
He expressed that the portrayal favored Muslim characters while undermining Hindu ones. Chak De! India, a 2007 sports drama follows Kabir Khan, a former Indian hockey player accused of betraying his country after losing to Pakistan.
To regain his honor he becomes the coach of the struggling Indian women’s hockey team. Annu Kapoor, known for films like Mr. India, Tezaab and Ghayal has also directed plays and a feature film and hosted the popular show Antakshari. He is widely recognized for his radio show Suhaana Safar With Annu Kapoor.
