What happens when the daughter of a legendary star decides to direct her dear father?
The outcome was rather dismal when Rajinikanth’s elder daughter, Soundarya, directed him in the 2014 disaster Kochadaiiyaan.
Now, it's the younger daughter, Aishwarya, former wife of actor Dhanush, who delivers a flop with her father in Laal Salaam.
It marks one of the poorest openings in Rajinikanth’s career.
The collections are only expected to decline further in the days to come, given that Laal Salaam isn't even a Rajinikanth starrer.
Instead, it features him in an extended guest appearance, a fact that has disappointed and infuriated Rajinikanth’s fans.
A well-known young Tamil actor shared his thoughts with this writer.
“Sir, it's pretty much a disaster. It’s a total washout in Telugu and only slightly better in Tamil. Rajini Sir did the film for his daughter’s sake. She should have been more careful. The film tells a very poor Hindu-Muslim story. The direction is confused and confusing. It's an embarrassment for Rajini Sir and also for us, his fans. We all look up to him.”
