The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has achieved a remarkable feat by incubating 104 startups during the 2024–25 financial year, averaging one new venture every three days. This milestone is part of the ambitious ‘Startup 100 Mission’ envisioned by Director Professor V. Kamakoti. The startups were nurtured through the IIT Madras Incubation Cell (IITMIC) and the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, with Professor Kamakoti announcing the achievement on World IP Day, April 26, 2025.
More than half of these startups were created within IIT Madras’ own ecosystem, involving faculty, students, staff, and alumni. The remaining ventures included external entrepreneurs, showcasing the inclusive nature of the institute’s startup environment. These startups span various deep-tech sectors, such as aerospace, health tech, and robotics, with companies like Inbound Aerospace and Matterize praising IITMIC's support in turning ideas into successful businesses.
IIT Madras has significantly boosted its startup output, growing from an average of 60 startups per year to 104. Over the past 12 years, it has fostered 457 startups, valued at over 50,000 crore, including two unicorns. This achievement further solidifies IIT Madras’ position as a leader in innovation and entrepreneurship in India.
