The Indian government has introduced a new rule for birth registrations. So far only the family's religion was recorded in Form No. 1 for a newborn. Now, an additional column has been added to include the parents' religion.
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has initiated this change. Now, when a child is born, both parents' religion must be stated separately in the birth registration.
The Home Ministry has drafted model rules for this, sent to state governments for implementation.
The government plans to use this data for various official documents like the National Population Register, Aadhar Card and others.
The digital birth certificate will serve as a valid document for school or college admissions.
Adding to this, new rules regarding death certificates have been introduced. Along with the cause of death, information about any chronic illnesses will also be required.
The Registrar General of India will oversee the national database of births and deaths.
But on the other hand, the opposition parties are trying to see something political in this. They are yet to respond on this.
