Politics Around Cricket And Mumbai

Aaditya Thackeray who is the leader of Shiv Sena Uddhav Bal Thackeray and former Maharashtra minister criticized the BCCI for hosting the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad instead of Mumbai.

Thackeray's criticism came after a massive crowd celebrated the Indian cricket team's 2024 ICC World Cup victory in Mumbai.

He emphasized that Mumbai which has a rich cricketing history including hosting the 2007 T20 World Cup victory the 2011 Cricket World Cup win and Sachin Tendulkar's farewell in 2013 should not be overlooked for such events.

Thackeray had previously accused the BJP of shifting significant projects and events from Mumbai to Gujarat citing losses to Maharashtra in terms of industries and projects like the International Finance Center and the Vedanta Foxconn project.

In an interview he expressed disappointment over the World Cup final being moved to Ahmedabad hinting the economic and cultural impacts on Mumbai.
