Kozhikode: India's 1st UNESCO 'City Of Literature'

In October 2023 Kozhikode was recognized in the 'Literature' category of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN). 

The announcement was made by State Local Self Government Department Minister M B Rajesh, highlighting Kozhikode's values of humanity, harmony, justice and freedom of expression. 

These values have fostered a vibrant literary culture in the city. The Kozhikode city corporation's efforts were crucial in securing this title surpassing other culturally rich cities like Kolkata. 

The state government declared June 23 as 'City of Literature' Day honoring local literary figures and presenting special awards. 

Tourism Minister P A Mohammed Riyas also unveiled the UNESCO 'City of Literature' logo. 

Kozhikode, historically significant as the city of Zamorins and a gateway for various international traders has been a hub for literary activities and festivals boasting over 500 libraries. 

Alongside Gwalior which was recognized in the 'Music' category Kozhikode joins 55 new cities in the UCCN. 

This network now includes 350 cities globally celebrated for their cultural and creative development strategies. 

The new members are invited to the UCCN Annual Conference in Braga, Portugal, in 2024.
