A 42 year old Australian man faces charges for running an 'evil twin' scam using fake free WiFi networks to steal personal data from users at airports in Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide.
He set up devices that mimicked legitimate WiFi networks tricking users into logging in with their email or social media accounts.
This scam was discovered in April when an airline noticed a suspicious WiFi network. Authorities searched the man’s belongings at Perth Airport and seized devices containing stolen personal data. A subsequent raid at his home led to his arrest.
The Australian Federal Police advises caution when using public WiFi suggesting the use of VPNs avoiding sensitive activities like banking, and disabling file sharing.
They also recommend turning off WiFi on devices when not in use to prevent automatic connections and encourage reporting any suspicious activity to cyber.gov.au.
