Kerala: Nurse Becomes An MP In United Kingdom

Sojan Joseph, originally from Kerala has been elected to the British Parliament as a Labour Party candidate representing the Ashford constituency in Kent County. 

This victory marks a historic moment for both the Labour Party and the Ashford constituency, which had never before elected a Labour candidate in its 139 year history. 

Joseph who is 49 defeated Conservative veteran Damien Green and is one of twenty seven Indian origin Members of Parliament in the House of Commons.

Joseph's win signifies the end of the Conservative Party's 14 year rule with Labour leader Keir Starmer poised to become the new prime minister. 

Joseph, a mental health nurse with the NHS in Kent moved to the UK in 2002 after completing his nursing studies in Bengaluru. 

His family in Kerala including his father and three sisters expressed joy and pride at his victory. 

Joseph joined the Labour Party due to his commitment to socialist ideals. He recently lost his mother Elikutty and had visited Kerala during that time.
