Indians Rescued From Cambodia Scam

The Indian Embassy in Cambodia has rescued the first group of 60 Indian nationals trapped by fraudulent employers.

On May 23 the embassy announced the rescue on social media expressing gratitude to the Cambodian government for their support.

The embassy had previously warned Indian job seekers in Cambodia about unauthorized agents and the risks of seeking employment on tourist visas.

The incident gained attention when 300 Indians protested against their handlers on May 20 leading to arrests.

Of these about 150 were from Visakhapatnam of Andhra Pradesh and had been in Cambodia for a year coerced into cybercrime and Ponzi schemes by Chinese handlers.

Visakhapatnam Police Commissioner A Ravi Shankar reported that the trafficked individuals caused riots in Sihanoukville, a known cybercrime hub.

The police arrested three traffickers who lured Indians with fake job offers in Singapore but sent them to Cambodia instead. The victims were held captive and forced into scams.

Visakhapatnam Joint Commissioner of Police Fakkeerappa Kaginelli noted that nearly 5,000 Indians were trafficked to Cambodia through various agents. With the recent arrests, 150 youths have been identified in Cambodia.
