Viriato Fernandes, the Congress candidate for South Goa, stated that after Goa was freed from Portuguese rule in 1961, the Indian Constitution was imposed on it against its will.
This comment was criticized by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who called it shocking and claimed that the Congress poses a danger to democracy.
Fernandes, speaking at an election gathering, mentioned that despite assurances from Prime Minister Nehru that Goa would determine its fate after liberation, this didn't happen.
He also discussed a previous meeting with Rahul Gandhi where they discussed 12 demands, including dual citizenship for Goans with Portuguese passports.
Fernandes argued that the Indian Constitution was forced upon Goa after its liberation in 1961 and that Goa was not consulted.
Chief Minister Sawant condemned Fernandes' remarks on social media, accusing the Congress of delaying Goa's liberation and undermining the Indian Constitution.
He urged the Congress to stop its divisive politics.
Goa will vote in the third phase of polling on May 7.
