An independent U.S. laboratory Valisure has reported detecting high levels of the cancer-causing chemical benzene in certain acne treatments including brands like Estee Lauder's Clinique, Target's Up & Up, and Clearasil, owned by Reckitt Benckiser.
Valisure has taken action by filing a petition with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration urging for the recall of these products initiating an investigation and revising industry guidance.
According to Valisure, benzene could form at "unacceptably high levels" in both prescription and over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide acne treatment products.
