China: World's First Carbon Fiber Train

China: World's First Carbon Fiber Train

China unveiled the world's first passenger train made from carbon fiber known for its lightweight and energy-efficient properties in Qingdao Shandong province.

Named Cetrovo 1.0 or Carbon Star Rapid Transit this metro train, developed by Qingdao Sifang Rolling Stock Company a subsidiary of China Railway Construction Corporation has completed in factory testing and will start operating later this year.

The train's primary load bearing structures are made from carbon fiber composite materials making it 11% lighter than traditional trains.

This weight reduction will decrease energy consumption by 7% annually equivalent to cutting about 130 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Cetrovo 1.0 trains are designed to reach speeds of 140 km/h faster than the average 80 km/h. Fully automated and driverless they can navigate challenging tracks and harsh conditions.

The train also features advanced safety systems including anti collision and obstacle detection.

Reduced weight leads to lower maintenance costs and a quieter journey.
